It's always a huge talking point: Who will developed this year's Call of Duty?

\n

While rumours have been circulating that there may not be a full premium Call of Duty release, Activision has reaffirmed that there will be on to look forward to later this year.

\n

The development cycle of Call of Duty, previously, was very much a perfect cycle; switching between the three big developers with each passing year.

\n

However, in recent years, the flow has been interrupted and thrown the cycle off. So who will be developing Call of Duty 2023?

Call of Duty 2023 is confirmed to be releasing this year, Activision’s latest statement on this year’s Call of Duty title states: “Across the Call of Duty franchise, our teams are working to amplify the success of the fourth quarter, with 2023 plans including even more engaging live services across platforms and the next full annual premium release in the blockbuster series.”

\n

It was reported last year by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier that Call of Duty will be skipping its 2023 release. However, during Activision’s last financial call, the publisher confirmed that it will be launching a new premium title this year. Soon after, Schreier responded to Activision’s statements by saying that Call of Duty 2023 will be developed by Sledgehammer Games and is year two of Modern Warfare 2.

While it was thought this release was going to be delayed, due to the poor response Call of Duty: Vanguard received, it appears the success of the recent Modern Warfare 2 has encouraged Activision to push ahead with a new release.

\n

While their wording doesn't confirm a new standalone Call of Duty game, perhaps leaving room for a continuation with Modern Warfare 2 that adds new content, it's looking very likely.

\n

It remains to be seen how that new game will work with Warzone 2, as Warzone becomes the hub that connects Call of Duty games together. We may see a similar situation with how Warzone transitioned from Modern Warfare to Vanguard, implementing a new map, weapons and other features that release in the newer multiplayer game.
