August 16, 2022 - Marvel's Spider-Man Had a Multiplayer Mode

Following the release of the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remaster, Twitter user DniweTamp has discovered that the game has references to a multiplayer mode, which was clearly not available at launch.

To make sure VGC has verified the contents of the files, confirming these elements.

Could we perhaps see some sort of multiplayer in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2? After this discovery, it seems far more plausible.

June 18, 2022 - Insomniac hire MCU concept artist

As per VGC, Insomniac has hired an experienced Marvel Cinematic Universe concept artist to work as an art director for the Spider-Man 2 game at the studio.

Davison Carvalho worked as a freelance concept artist on Marvel movies such as Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok and Captain Marvel.

That certainly bodes well!

June 2, 2022 - Summer Game Fest Is Next Week

Don’t forget that the third Summer Game Fest takes place on June 9, and promises to showcase “what’s next in gaming with huge new game announcements, world premieres, special guests, and much more”.

It’s also worth noting that the show’s creator Geoff Keighley has let fans know that the show will be “primarily focused” on already announced games.

What are the chances we see an announcement for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2? Look we don’t hold out much hope. Although PlayStation was listed as one of the partners for Summer Game Fest, it could be that this was merely a reference to the State of Play from last week. Still, you never know, Geoff Keighley could still surprise us. Either way, tune it, it’ll be fun!

PS5 Release Date News

At the time of writing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 doesn’t have a firm release date, but Insomniac Games has confirmed that the game will release in 2023. Given that we’re expecting to see God of War Ragnarok towards the end of 2022, as well as a Remaster of The Last of Us too, we think Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is more likely to arrive in the latter part of 2023.

It’s also worth saying that the game could quite easily be delayed. We know Sony hasn’t been phased giving their tentpole games more time if they need it, and with Insomniac Games also developing Marvel’s Wolverine at the same time, we wouldn’t be surprised if one of the two games is held back to 2024.

Is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 coming to PS4?

As noted above, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is still quite a long way off from release. When it does though we don’t think it will be coming to PS4.

Although Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was a cross-gen game, launching on PS4 and PS5 simultaneously. For now though, Insomniac has said that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch “exclusively” for PlayStation 5. As such, we think it’s not very likely that we’ll see the game on PS4 when it does arrive.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Trailer

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was announced during Sony’s PlayStation Showcase event in September 2021. The trailer does not show actual gameplay and is only a short teaser trailer to set the scene of what we can expect.

That being said, it does reveal an awful lot about the game. For one, we see both Peter Parker and Miles Morales suggesting the game could see both characters teaming up some more. Or at the very least switching between either hero throughout the story. There’s also quite a few hints towards the villains we might see. More on that further down. You can take a look at the trailer just below:

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Villians

So far the only villain confirmed for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is Venom, with the symbiote voiced by horror icon Tony Todd, known best for his work as the terrifying Candyman killer. But beyond this, who else could we see? The trailer appears to include an ominous voice talking over the trailer who mentions looking for a new challenge and a formidable opponent, which sounds a lot like Kraven the Hunter. Beyond these two, it remains to be seen who else from the rogue’s gallery could feature.

Kingpin feels like a good shout. For one, he only features as the first mission and first boss battle in the first game before more or less disappearing from the main storyline. He also seems to have a bit of a minor role in Miles Morales and we definitely feels like there’s something more to be explored between these two.

Likewise, Morbius The Living Vampire seems a distinct possibility. In the first game Morgan Michaels is the name of the Scientist who worked on the Devil’s Breath drug for Oscorp. For those who don’t know, Morgan Michaels is an alias Morbius uses in the comic books. So this is either just a really clever nod, or some foreshadowing going on.

Finally we also briefly see Curt Connors in the Miles Morales post credits scene, working in the Oscorp lab under instruction from Norman Osborn.

Either way, there are still plenty more villains who we haven’t touched on who could show up having been absent from the first two games. To give you a sense of who has appeared and who hasn’t, check out the table below, which includes a list of some of the main villains we imagine could show up (in some form or another) in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Confirmed Details

With the game still quite far away there’s limited information about the game, however, we’ve listed below the key details which we have seen reported or confirmed by Insomniac staff.

Miles Morales novel writer joins Insomniac Games
A darker sequel like Empire Strikes Back

Marvel’s Spider-Man Story Predictions

We know that the game will feature Venom, and so far the writers have sort of teased that Norman Osborn has been trying to ‘cure’ his son from some sort of disease in the Oscorp Lab. We think that Harry Osborn has been infected by the Venom Symbiote and potentially the story will pick up just after the Post-Credits scene in Miles Morales where Norman tells Curt Conners (aka The Lizard) to release him.

If we had to guess, we think that Harry will lose control and Venom will be on the rampage throughout New York City. At this stage Kraven The Hunter will enter the story. Kraven is typically portrayed as a renowned big-game hunter, and Venom could certainly be the ultimate hunt. We imagine Peter will attempt to thwart Kraven, as he seeks a cure for Harry. And who knows, throughout this Norman Osborn might just go off the deep end and take on the mantle of the Green Goblin too.

Based on this, it certainly feels as though the story is going in a much darker direction with more focus on science. So having supplementary villains such as The Lizard, Morbius and Mysterio seem to fit the bill over some of the more cartoony, technologically advanced characters we saw in the first games.
