Sea of Thieves Season 8: Release Date, Leaks, and Latest Updates

Compared to its early days, Sea of Thieves has become a really strong GAAS title for Xbox, and the team at Rare are really starting to find their feet through the game’s seasonal content model.

For Season 7 players got a whole heap of new content, but also lots of new ways to interact with the game in new ways too; including the ability to name our ships, customise our captain’s cabin and more.

But as with any GAAS title, players always want to know what is coming next, so read on, let’s take a look at what Sea of Thieves Season 8 could bring to the captain’s table.

Sea of Thieves Season 8 Release Date

At the time of writing Rare has not announced an official date for when Sea of Thieves Season 8 starts but we have got a ‘rough’ idea of when we might be able to expect the new season.

The original Sea of Thieves 2022 Roadmap suggested that Season 8 would launch in September 2022. However, it’s worth pointing out that due to two separate delays, Season 7 started a little late. It was originally meant to launch in June, but only went live on August 4.

Past seasons have typically lasted somewhere between 9 to 14 weeks, so we can probably give a good prediction as to when SoT Season 8 starts. To help, take a look at the table below.

SEASON  START DATE  END DATE  DURATION
Season 1 January 28, 2021 April 15, 2021 11 Weeks
Season 2 April 15, 2021 June 22, 2021 9 Weeks
Season 3 June 22, 2021 September 23, 2021 13 Weeks
Season 4 September 23, 2021 December 2, 2021 10 Weeks
Season 5 December 2, 2021 March 10, 2022 14 Weeks
Season 6 March 10, 2022 August 4, 2022 21 Weeks
Season 7 August 4, 2022 ??? NA
Season 8 ??? ??? NA
Season 9 ??? ??? NA

If Sea of Thieves Season 8 was to start on October 13, it would be 10 weeks since the start of Season 7. Any later and it starts to become difficult to see Season 9 launching in December 2022. of course, Sea of Thieves Season 9 could be pushed back into 2023, but everything has a knock-on effect and it really depends how Rare wants to rejig their plans.

Of course, this is just a rough prediction on our part, so take it with a pinch of salt until Rare provides an official announcement.

Sea of Thieves Season 8 New Features

So far we have very little to go on when it comes to new features for Sea of Thieves Season 8, not least with the roadmap running a little bit behind schedule.

For now, we know that Season 8 will add the following:

  • Expanded Role Play & Quest Types
  • Three new adventures
  • ‘Ongoing mysteries’
  • New Monthly Emporium Content
  • A new plunder pass
  • And a Community Day

Beyond what was set out in the roadmap, it’s also interesting to note that during Gamescom 2022, the Sea of Thieves team spoke about future content too. This included a point where Joe Neate, Executive Producer on the game, started talking about another big decision point to make, similar to what happened with the Lost Sands, but arguably bigger and more impactful. Here’s the full quote:

Joe Neate: Honestly,  i love… knowing what the next decision point is and where we’re leading too, that is going to be another huge moment for our community to have to again make a choice right and the impact that’s coming with that, without teasing too much but it’s like you know, later this year there’s going to be another big one like i think bigger in terms of emotional impact.

Jo Clifford (Senior Community Manager): Yeah, I think the emotional investment in the next one I think will be bigger!

Sea of Thieves Season 8 Leaks & Teasers

For the time being there’s not been any concrete Season 8 leaks, but we have had plenty of theroies and teasers which hint at where the game could be heading.

One of our favourite theories stems from the all-knowing Sea of Thieves YouTuber Captain Falcore, who suggests that the game might look to add a much darker and more mysterious version of James T Hook.

That’s everything you need to know about Sea of Thieves Season 8 for the time being, but make sure to check back for the latest news, leaks and updates as they become available.
