If you’re attempting to log into GTA Online and instead receiving an error message which reads ‘Files required to play GTA Online could not be downloaded from the Rockstar Games Service’ don’t worry, it’s not the end of the world.

Generally speaking, these issues will sometimes occur when Rockstar Games are carrying out scheduled and unscheduled server maintenance.

There is a fix for the error message you’re receiving, it just takes a bit of time, and also the knowledge of how to get around the issue. Keep reading, and we’ll explain how.

How To Fix ‘Files Required To Play’ Error

Before we proceed, it’s worth noting that these are not official fixes. The solutions come from users online in places like Reddit who have had success by following the steps outlined below.

That being said, before trying these fixes, perhaps it’s worth you checking your internet connection and changing your internet settings before more drastic measures. To do this:

  • Go to console Settings > Network > Change Network
  • Follow the steps to connect to either a mobile hotspot, or a different WiFi connection
  • If this solution works and GTA Online loads, you may be nothing more than a problem with your WiFi router.

If you’re playing on a PC navigate to your Windows Firewall settings, find the ‘Outbound files’ option, and ensure GTA5.exe is unblocked.

The Windows Firewall settings are generally located in the Windows Control Panel. Find the Firewall Settings, go to Advanced settings and select “Outbound rules”. If GTA5 .exe file is blocked, right-click and select ‘allow’.

How to fix ‘Files Required To Play’ error on GTA Online for Console (PlayStation & Xbox)

Console players may be required to change their DNS Internet Settings settings in order to get GTA Online to run properly. The ideal DNS settings for the game to connect to the servers properly appear to be:

  • Primary 84.200.69.80
  • Secondary 84.200.70.40

Xbox users can follow the steps below to change their DNS settings:

  • Home Screen > Settings > Network > Advanced Settings
  • DNS Settings > Manual
  • Now change your DNS settings to match the above primary and secondary server settings.

PlayStation users will need to do the same, but by following the steps below:

  • Home Screen > Settings > Network > Setup Internet Connection > Choose Connection Type > Custom Setup
  • From here, select ‘Automatic IP Address Settings’ and choose ‘Do Not Specify’.
  • Now head to the DNS Settings and change to Manual.
