Ghostwire Tokyo 2: Tango Gamework’s Director Wants To Make DLC and A Sequel

August 18, 2022

Tango Gamework’s action-adventure was something of a departure for the studio which was slowly becoming best known for its survival horror series The Evil Within. The new supernatural action game wasn’t perfect by any means, a quick look at Metacritic would tell you that it’s roughly around that mid 70’s mark for both PS5 and PC. But it’s not bad, not by a long shot. It might be a little shallow gameplay wise, but it looks gorgeous and it’s fairly enjoyable from start to finish. Following some reasonable reviews from critics and fans alike, the question is being asked if Tango Gameworks plan on making a Ghostwire Tokyo Sequel, or at the vest least, DLC for the existing game. Read on, we’ll tell you everything you need to know if you’re looking forward to more content in the future.

Will There Be A Ghostwire Tokyo 2?

For the time being nothing has been confirmed, and it’s not completely clear whether the developers would even be able to create DLC given Microsoft’s acquisition of the game’s publisher, Bethesda. With the project concluded, would Microsoft really want one of their own developers creating further content for the PlayStation console exclusive? We doubt it somewhat.

Despite this, it’s clear from interviews with the Ghostwire: Tokyo team at Tango Gameworks that they would be interested in exploring the game further.

Speaking with wccftech.com, Producer Masato Kimura gave a fairly comprehensive answer when asked if they would like to explore the franchise more with future DLC. In response, Kimura said:

“We’ve just finished the game. We’re in this comfort zone of that relief of just being able to finish a big thing right now, so we haven’t given that much thought quite yet, but after we get some rest it’s likely that we’ll start thinking about something cool. If there’s an opportunity to create DLC, then that’s something that we’ll probably want to think about. As developers, we always want to continue making and improving the work that we’ve done, so DLC is always something that we want to do, but that really depends on the success of the title and how the community reacts to the release of Ghostwire: Tokyo. We’ll have to wait and see, but if the opportunity arises, it’s something that we’ll definitely want to jump on.”

Will There Be A Ghostwire Tokyo Sequel?

More recently in an interview with IGN Japan (Via GamesRadar), Ghostwire: Tokyo director Kenji Kimura also suggested that he would be keen to make not just DLC, but also a full sequel.

“I think that when things calm down a bit more, and when I’ve cooled down a bit more, I’ll have ideas for DLC and sequels, and I’ll want to make them,” said Kimura. “Nothing has been decided yet, so I can’t tell you anything more than that.”

Again, it’s not clear whether Xbox would want a sequel. To be honest, if they did, it might depend on how the game performs when it comes to Xbox next year. For those who don’t know the game is a one-year timed exclusive on PS5, so Ghostwire Tokyo will come to Xbox after March 25, 2023. Depending on how it does, we can envision an Xbox exclusive sequel.

One interesting piece we read from TechRadar argues that Ghostwire Tokyo is the kind of exclusive Xbox Series X desperately needs. We agree, and who knows, maybe it’s one they’ll get in a few years’ time.

Release Dates

By this point, you should have worked out that there are no confirmed release dates for a sequel or DLC.

Given the way the dev team are talking, we doubt that they’ve started work on Ghostwire Tokyo DLC, and as such, we doubt they’ll get the chance to make any extra content for the game until it makes it’s way onto Xbox. If we had to guess, we’d say that maybe the DLC would be released as Xbox exclusive or first on Xbox.

As for a sequel, again, we doubt we’ll see any sequel, if there is to be one, for at least another three years. Potentially the game does get a sequel, but we think it will be Xbox exclusive and won’t launch until 2025 or 2026 at the earliest.
